Engineer Discovers the Artistry Within
Fred Stave's background is rooted in design and perfection. For many years, he worked as a research and products development engineer and design manager at RCA Corporation. In 1985, Fred co-founded a small medical device company and created a tool utilized in cataract eye surgery. For the remainder of his engineering career, Fred directed a global group of applied research engineers at Whirlpool Corporation.
In retirement, Fred considered the possibility of building a keepsake for his 3 (now 4) grandchildren. After attending a large woodworking show in 2000, the idea was born... design and build an heirloom quality rocking horse for each of the grandchildren. Each rocker would be so beautiful and durable that it would be passed on from generation to generation.
Other grandparents saw the beauty and artistry of Fred's creations, and they asked him to build rocking horses for their grandchildren and families as well. Fred has found his artistic side, and we are so glad he did! He has combined his engineering, design, and woodworking skills to create some of the most beautiful rocking toys in the world.
Fred and his wife Sondra are the parents of two boys and two girls and the grandparents of one grandson and three granddaughters. They live in Indiana with their three Cocker Spaniels on 150 wooded acres by Goose Creek Bay. With most of his time spent in the workshop designing and building these beautiful, one-of-a-kind Riding Rockers, Fred delights in being a true perfectionist. He combines artistry, skill, and attention to detail to make delightful rocking animals for today's children and for future generations.
Artisan Collaborates with Artist
After perfecting his natural wood rocking horses, Fred decided to expand his collection to include hand painted rockers, so he invited Pat Holcomb to join Goose Creek Enterprises. Fred and Pat initially collaborated on the design for the "pig", and this collaboration was so successful it has now extended to other hand painted animals.
Pat's color choices and winsome designs are the perfect match for Fred's unique rocking toys. Their combined talents and commitment to excellence are obvious in every toy they produce. Pat Holcomb initially realized her talent and interest in art in high school art class. Her first work was an oil painting of one of her mother's Hummel figurines. Pat has expanded her artistic interest over the years exploring many artistic mediums. Because of her passion for art, her home is filled with her original creations.
Pat and her husband Ted have two sons, and they are the grandparents of two more boys. A woman of many talents, Pat served in the military for 3 years as a Biomedical Equipment Technician. Later, she worked as a mortgage loan processor and then as an assistant manager for a large financial company. In addition to her artistic endeavors, Pat currently directs her own boarding kennel, rescues animals, and still finds time for photography, gardening and home improvement projects!
Pat expresses her love of children, her delight in animals, and her rich appreciation of nature when she paints her original designs on these rocking animals. We are so glad she has created the Cosmic Rocking Horse, the Winged Rocking Horse, and the Funky Flying Pig exclusively for Heirlooms To Be.
